On April 20 at Zwevezele, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, in what can only be described as a super-fight, “La Pantera” Erica Anabella Farias of Virreyes, Buenos Aires, Argentina, will defend her WBC female lightweight title against #1-contender Delfine Persoon of Roeselare, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. In March 2013, the “Banger from Belgium” Persoon (28-1, 13 KOs) secured the #1 ranking at lightweight in the WBC with a knockout victory over Kremena Petkova (KO-2) in an eliminator bout. The 28-year-old Persoon, in the prime of her career, is streaking at an opportune time fighting to a record of (7-0, 4 KOs) in 2013 including a knockout victory over the current IBF welterweight champion Eva Halasi (TKO-3) in November. Most recently, in December, she successfully defended her WIBF lightweight title and added the WBF & WIBA lightweight titles by knockout victory over Italian Lucia Morelli (TKO-10).
Farias (18-0, 9 KOs) since winning the WBC female lightweight title in May 2010, she has successfully defended the belt 10-times including impressive victories over challengers Ann Saccurato, Melissa Hernandez, and Victoria Noelia Bustos. After defeating every worthy challenger over her 3 ½ year reign as champion, Farias has saved the best for last in defending against Persoon.
The trip to Belgium will be the first time fighting outside her native Argentina for Farias. A victory against the streaking Persoon will cement the reputation of Farias as a pound-for-pound great worthy of a lofty rating on any list.
