Mako Yamada wins WBO Minimumweight Title!


Chuncheon, South Korea: In a minor upset, 19-year-old slugger Mako Yamada (7-0, 2 KOs) of Kitakyushu, Fukuoka, Japan, wrestled away the WBO female minimumweight title away from undefeated southpaw Su-Yun Hong (9-1, 5 KOs) of Hwaseong City, South Korea, winning a ten-round split-decision by the scores (97-93/96-94/96-97).

Yamada diligently worked the body early in the competition switching upstairs later in the match when Hong appeared weakened. At fights’ end, Hong was hanging on for dear life in hopes that she would emerge victorious owning the “home country” advantage; however, the judges properly awarded Yamada the decision and the WBO title via split-decision.

With the win, Yamada becomes the first Japanese WBO female world champion and at the age of 19, the youngest female world champion in the history of the modern era.
