On March 15 at the Performing Arts Center in Oxnard, California, Maureen “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Shea, Oxnard by way of, Bronx, New York, pitched a near shutout over late substitute Nohime Dennisson, Albuquerque, New Mexico, by the scores (99-91 x3).
The originally scheduled opponent, 18-year-old Dayana Cordero, was unable to obtain a visa to leave her native Columbia. The vacant WBO featherweight title was connected to Cordero as the opponent which was dropped when Dennisson, now (5-3-2, 0 KOs) was announced as the opponent. Cordero’s record is (13-4-1, 9 KOs); despite her youth, she is well thought of as a potential title challenger.
With the win, Shea improves to (23-2, 11 KOs) and is widely regarded as a serious challenger to title holders at both featherweight and super-featherweight. Shea is best known for being a sparring partner for actress Hilary Swank during her preparations for the 2004 movie, “The Million Dollar Baby.” Swank won an Oscar for her portrayal as a professional female fighter in the movie.
