On June 7 in Schwerin, Germany, the “First Lady” of boxing, Cecilia Braekhus (24-0, 7 KOs) Bergen, Norway, will defend her WBO, WBC, & WBA welterweight titles against Jessica “The Hammer” Balogun (24-3, 12 KOs) Aachen, Germany. This is a rematch of their June 2012 title fight won by Braekhus (UD-10). The bout will be televised by Germany ARD and Hungary Sport 2 and is promoted by Chris Meyer (Sauerland Event).
Braekhus, 32, appeared to be at the peak of her game on February 1 at Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, Denmark, when she dominated French boxing star, Myriam Lamare knocking her down in the seventh round and winning a lopsided unanimous decision. For Braekhus, it was the 13th successful defense of the WBC title, 12th of the WBA title, and 10th of the WBO belt.
Braekhus said, “I can not wait to get back in the ring again. I’ve been training hard the last five-six weeks, hoping to get a fight before the summer. Now I am very happy, and very pleased that Team Sauerland and Team Braekhus have left our winter and spring disagreements behind us, and found a common path that is good for both parties. My great desire to fight on German TV is an added bonus.”
Promoter Nisse Sauerland said of the Braekhus defense, ‘’we are pleased to have reached an understanding with Cecilia. As we have always said the most important thing is that Cecilia remains active and I am delighted that the parties have found a solution and that she will be boxing for Team Sauerland. We hope that Cecilia can still box three times this year. She is a fantastic athlete and we look forward to seeing her back in the ring.
Balogun, on March 1 lost a one-sided unanimous decision to WBF & WBO middleweight champion, Christina Hammer in a bid for Hammer’s middleweight titles. Most recently, she stopped light middleweight Edita Lesnik, in two rounds in a tune-up for her challenge of Braekhus.
Braekhus said of her challenger, “Balogun is a strong opponent and must not be overlooked. She gave Cecilia a tough test the first time around and will be out for revenge in Schwerin.”
Prediction: Braekhus UD-10 98-92
