Hammer wins WBO Light-Middlweight Title on her back

Dessau, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany: Christina Hammer, 152 ½, of Dortmund, wins the vacant WBO light-middleweight title with a controversial fifth-round disqualification of French slugger Anne Sophie Mathis, 151 ¾. The reports are sketchy, but essentially, Christina Hammer was knocked out in the fourth round, but Manfred Kuechler, the assigned referee, ruled that Mathis had thrown, and illegal blow and awarded Hammer, the victory. With the win, Hammer improves her record to (18-0, 8 KOs) and wins a world title in her third-weight division (JMW, MW, and SMW). Her reputation as a pound-for-pound élite fighter likely takes a substantial hit. With the loss, Mathis drops to (27-4, 23 KOs).

A Congratulations to women’s boxing; you have come a long way baby.
