On August 3 in Berlin, Germany, Jennifer Retzke, 145 ½, in front of her hometown fans, won the vacant IBO female welterweight title with a ten-round, split-decision over Kenyan based contender, Florence Muthoni, 141 by the scores of (96-94/96-94/93-97). Retzke (15-1-1, 9 KOs), formerly the IBF light-middleweight champion, is a three-division champion previously winning the GBU title at light-welterweight. This battle was a rematch of their August 2013 battle which ended in a controversial majority-draw. In this contest, the German judge scored for Muthoni while the remaining two judges, both from Italy, favored the hometown fighter by two points on each scorecard.
Since losing a unanimous-decision in a bid for the interim WBA female light-welterweight title to popular Russian fighter Svetlana Kulakova in November, Muthoni, now (11-4-1, 5 KOs) rallied for three wins in as many fighters before receiving the losing end of the split-decision to Retzke in their second battle.
