On July 25 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Adela Celeste del Carmen Peralta, 139, Buenos Aires, pulled off a mild upset winning an eight-round, majority-decision (78-76 1/2, 78-77, 78-78) in a non-title fight over WBA super-lightweight champion Ana Laura Esteche, 140 ¾, San Martin. With the win, the 28-year-old Peralta, in her first bout in excess of six rounds, improved to (7-0, 1 KO). With the loss, Esteche, 24, drops to (11-4-2, 2 KOs).
Esteche won the WBA female super-lightweight title in January 2014 with a one-sided unanimous decision over the long-time champion, Monica Silvina Acosta. Esteche last entered the ring in November winning a ten-round, split-decision in a non-title fight over the current WBO female super-lightweight champion, Fernanda Soledad Alegre (21-2-1, 11 KOs). The eight-month layoff was the longest inactive stretch of Esteche’s four-year career.
Peralta, a professional for nearly three years, although undefeated, isn’t well known or established. In most recent start (October 2014) she endured a life-and-death struggle winning a four-round, split-decision against a fighter owning a (1-2) record. However, the win over Esteche is impressive, and it may catapult her career.
