11 November 2016
Delfine Persoon, 31, retained her WBC World female lightweight title when challenger Ruth Stephanie Aquino was disqualified in the first round for failure to rise after what was either a slip or a knockdown. It was a strange sight to see.
With the win, Persoon, an elite pound-for-pound fighter, improves to (37-1, 16 KOs). The 28-year-old Aquino drops to (8-3, 1 KO). It was the first world title challenge for Aquino who should go back to the drawing board to determine if she owns the motivation to continue her career.
Maiva Hamadouche, France, is the WBC Silver female lightweight title holder and is a serious challenger to Persoon’s title reign. Hamadouche lost a closely-contested unanimous decision to Persoon for the WBC World female lightweight title in November 2015.
In closing, Persoon will likely elevate to #2 in my monthly women’s boxing pound-for-pound rankings.
