Naoko Shibata to defend IBF Title


Today at the Arena Jalisco in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, the IBF World female light-flyweight champion Naoko Shibata (16-3-1, 5 KOs) Tokyo, Japan, will look to successfully defend her title for the fifth time (4-0-1 in title fights during that span) when she faces Alondra “Magnifica” Garcia (16-3-1, 1 KO) of Guadalajara.  Garcia lost in three previous in attempts at world titles including a November 2013 defeat to Shibata (UD-10) for the Shibata now holds. Incidentally, Garcia’s world title attempts came in three different weight classes (minimumweight, light-flyweight, and bantamweight). Shibata, 35, will be hard pressed to retain her title in the backyard of Garcia.

On the undercard in the featherweight class, Marisol “Coronita” Corona (8-2-1, 4 KOs) will face Marcela Varela (2-1, 2 KOs).
